Rick Wakes Up From A Coma And Goes Outside

In the pilot episode, “Days Gone Bye”, after wakes from his coma he starts to quickly notice the world he’s waking up to isn’t the same one from before he was shot. As he goes outside the hospital he notices the piles of bodies, burned out buildings, and deserted military vehicles.

These scenes were filmed at the administrative offices of Atlanta Mission (formerly known as Atlanta Union Mission). I believe the building was under construction, or remodeling, at the time the show was filmed which helped the overall look of Rick’s new world.

Many thanks to chad_davis for letting us know where this was filmed as well as Harley Big Daddy for taking the photos.

  1. Is it different in the webisode where the woman takes the man to the hospital only to find the one pro suicide doctor who wants her to euthanize her boyfriend? I thought it was only a single or basement/ground floor building in the scenes when they arrived there before Rick woke up.

I got to drive into this site today and had no idea of the CGI that was involved in shooting this scene. I got a really good pic of the “hospital back door” as it is now on 9/12/13. There were maybe 3 cars total in the Carpenter House building. Highly suggested first visit for anyone on their own visiting TWD sites. Awesome job with this site! First season, and specifaically first 2 episodes are my fav…thanks to this site for helping me locate these set locations.

no puedes tener mejores fotos para ver como es el escenario completo???

The pictures above of Rick leaving the hospital thru the rear entrance is actually the back of a building called The Carpenters House. It’s right next door to the Atlanta Mission. Atlanta Mission parking lot is where the military vehicles & the helicopter were parked when Rick left the hospital.

I grew up in the neighborhood where that was located. It gave me quite a shock to see it in Walking Dead. It’s actually a few blocks from Marietta Blvd., it’s nearer Marietta Rd.

Although I have to say, honestly and sadly: parts of that area do have a post-apocalyptic look about them these days. Fifty or sixty years ago (when I was a child), it was a nice middle-class neighborhood.

Anyone think it was kinda ironic that what was clearly the back side of the hosipital had an old broken “entrance” sign that they cgi’ed into the image -_-

  7. Reid Davis says:

Yep, Bolton Road at Marietta Blvd. I’d passed it a bunch of times (because I have a friend who lives in one of the Brock subdivisions up there) but it was a head scratcher when it showed up onscreen.

It looks like they added a CGI second floor in the shot where Rick emerges from the hospital.

Bertrand Russell~ Man needs for his happiness not only the enjoyment of this or that but hope and enterprise and change.
